Oil Museum and Cisternone

The Olivastra Seggianese is the protagonist of an enhancement project of considerable importance and singularity. In fact, a civic museum was dedicated to this plant and its territory in 2012. The Oil Museum represents a unique and innovative path to celebrate oil, but also a partnership between heritage, architecture, arts and science. The purpose of this project is indeed to tell and celebrate the ancient agricultural tradition of olive growing, but also to be evidence of an innovative charge and a reference point for experimentation in agriculture thanks to the unique installation of Olivastra in the Cisternone. The Cisternone is a nineteenth-century water tank where a Seggianese olive plant was suspended with its roots free in the void: it is the largest plant in the world powered with aeroponic technology.

The installation of the olive tree in the cistern constitutes the translation of the PRINCIPLE ON THE METHODS OF COMMUNICATION OF PLANTS. The plant fed with the aeroponic system in fact transmits its impulses in relation to physical-environmental stimuli, through a continuous monitoring device.

Furthermore, the museum itinerary also includes various buildings that have been recovered and renovated. These include an old oil mill from the 19th century, the oratory of San Rocco with its frescoes from 1490, the spaces of the former town hall and the new oil shop in the main square where you can taste and buy typical products.
